Mess in a Bottle
Shavise Glascoe
A few years ago, I began practicing the art of self expression. I know this sounds weird, but stay with me here. For as long as I can remember, I’ve shied away from being bold or too “out there” with how I carried myself. That headspace was giving real “low self-esteem”!
The funny thing about life ,when you try to camp out in your comfort zone too long, is that s**t gets shaken up regardless. The highs and lows of life over the past decade led to more changes than a profound vision board. It led me to embracing myself as is, owning my quirks and being bold enough to express it.
When I say self expression please refrain from the visual of me going off on anyone I disagree with or shouting my thoughts on the mountaintops. (Now if you didn’t have the visual, you have it now LOL). For me, self expression is a multifaceted beast that I’ve unleashed over the years from going natural with my hair, to tapping into my creativity and adjusting my wardrobe.
For me the clothing journey is an ongoing process, I’ll admit. If you see me, don’t expect much lol. So when I come across brands that fit the style that I’m looking to achieve or produce a product that “speaks” for me, I’m instantly sold and that was the case when I discovered Mess in a Bottle.
I learned of this brand via good ol social media. I was captivated by the black and white shirts, relatable messages and overall vibe. I did what we all do and followed the page for a while. I’ll be honest and note that I didn’t notice that they were in Baltimore (yes you can judge me) until a few months into my Instagram following lol. So let’s add being local to the long list of reasons as to why this brand is EVERYTHING!
As you can see with the product images that I’m a fan and got liberal with my coins the day that I visited the shop, but was worth it. Here are a few reasons as to why Mess in a Bottle will always have a spot in my home, wardrobe and heart:
The MESSages speak to me and for me. Although this may seem simple, it’s actually pretty rare to find any apparel that can give me a voice. To know that is a part of their mission is comforting and deeply appreciated.
They have products in so many sizes! From XS (my size) to 5XL this brand is the definition of inclusive and that is important. They also have kids sizes and I’ll just be grateful that my son still thinks I’m cool enough to have matching shirts. No it’s not the WAP shirt LOL.
The founder and owner, Kalilah Wright, is an inspiration. Her transparency, creative eye and overall swag is beyond impressive. Trust me, follower @ownerofmess on Instagram and you’ll see. Also, remember when I said they were local. Well one morning when I was feeling down and driving my kid to school, I saw her running in the neighborhood. She may never know this, but seeing her chase after a fitness goal, did something for me and got me out of a creative funk. Also, I’ll add that the podcast episode on Small Doses was bomb.
The collaborations are EVERYTHING. From their work with Roc Nation to CLAWS on TNT (which is a great show) this brand is definitely on the move and strikes while the iron is hot. Which means I need to hit up the online store more often LOL.
T-shirts are great, but to have the ability to celebrate the product in more ways is a godsend. The new journal, candle and other home goods are perfect to add to your own home decor.
So if you are looking for a great brand to add to your wardrobe, home decor and more, check out Mess in a Bottle!
